Rights of the People
Near and dear to my heart: The Rights of the People. God bless the ones who gave me the rights I enjoy today even though they probably had no idea what these rights would let loose in me. I am a descendent of people who have served in the U.S. military all the way back to the American Revolution. Even today I have close relatives who serve in our nation's military. I take these rights very seriously. When someone tries to undermine the rights of another, the beast in me can and has definitely showed her fangs.
Freedom of speech is my all time favorite and if you know me I exercise that one regularly. I was livid when I heard in 2002 the allegations that county workers were told that if they spoke out on the Nopeming issue they would lose their jobs. I went in front of the County Board and went on record with these allegations. I know you're wondering what happened. Well the answer is simple; not a thing. It wasn't even looked into. How do I know that? Because the only way you can look into these things is by asking the person making the allegations questions I was never questioned about it.
Then I was at a endorsement interview with a newspaper and two sitting County Commissioners. I brought it up again. Their response? They laughed about it. No, I am not joking, they actually laughed.
The first amendment rights that allow the news industry to be what it is today is a joking matter to this newspaper. I found that pretty unsettling. You see I may not agree with what you say, I may be totally opposed to it but I will fight for your right to say it no matter what.
To me it doesn't matter -- race, creed, color, religion, sexual orientation -- the rights of the people must be upheld no matter what. Anyone who sits in a political office whether it be city, county, state or federal in my opinion has an obligation, not to mention they swear under oath, to uphold the rights of the people they are there to serve. Further more I don't believe that they are truly representing the people if they are not willing to fight for the people's rights.
